Who arrives at your practice

Every UT Tyler NP student you meet already holds an RN license: UT Tyler ties all APRN clinical hours to an unencumbered Texas or compact license and requires NP students to reside in Texas. Most requests come from three tracks: the Family NP, the Psychiatric-Mental Health NP and the post-master's Adult-Gerontology Acute Care NP certificate.

The classroom groundwork comes first. In the FNP and PMHNP plans, advanced pathophysiology (NURS 5350), advanced health assessment (NURS 5352) and pharmacotherapeutics (NURS 5354) precede the first clinical course, and AGACNP students complete four Principles of Acute Care courses before their first practicum. What they need from you is the part no lecture supplies: history, exam, diagnosis and plan, checked by someone who does it every day.

Saying yes: the online Preceptor Agreement

Agreeing takes minutes. The student proposes you on a Self-Placement Request, which is why they ask for your credentials, license details and the inbox you actually read. The Clinical Coordinator checks what the student entered, then sends you a link to a short survey where you choose to agree. UT Tyler's InPlace how-to spells out that this agreement is not a paper form.

Your practice or hospital signs something different: an affiliation agreement with UT Tyler, completed on paper with a wet signature and in place before any student clinical experience begins. For a site that has never hosted a UT Tyler student, that contract is usually the slowest step; the affiliation agreements page explains why.

Course faculty then approve you and the site for that course, and the Clinical Coordinator clears the placement. Hours logged before full approval do not count, so the first shift waits for clearance even if your calendar opens sooner. The approval page traces each sign-off.

Who qualifies, in brief

UT Tyler's 2023 NP Preceptor Guide, citing Texas Administrative Code 219.10, asks a nurse preceptor for a master's in nursing, authorization in the advanced role and a year in it, and asks physicians and PAs for a license and a year of experience. UT Tyler's online preceptor page wants two years plus board certification; a clinician who meets that line satisfies both.

Your license and practice must be in Texas, and for a PMHNP student the patients must be too. Telehealth teaching counts only with you supervising on site, and PMHNP courses cap telehealth at 63 hours each. A student cannot train under their own supervisor, anyone in their reporting line or a relative. Track-by-track rules live on preceptor requirements.

During the rotation and at the end

UT Tyler faculty remain responsible for the course, and the student carries most of the paperwork. Your part is teaching in the flow of your clinic and confirming what you saw.

Before the first shift, the student gives you the UT Tyler Preceptor Handbook from the Mission Possible Canvas course, reviews it with you and shares at least three written, measurable objectives for your site.
The student negotiates the clinical schedule with you. PMHNP rules cap clinical time at 11 hours in any 24-hour period and keep it off university holidays, breaks and finals week.
FNP students enter hours in Exxat within 72 hours, and the totals must match the daily sheets you sign. You may be asked to look over the student's logs in the placement software.
FNP faculty set up a virtual meeting with you and the student and may visit the site unannounced.
The student wears a UT Tyler name badge at all times in clinical.

Your formal verdict is the Clinical Performance Evaluation, which UT Tyler's 2023 guide has reach you by email from the placement software, InPlace at the time; Fall 2026 courses use Exxat. An FNP student needs two passing evaluations from preceptors, with 80% as the passing mark, so your rating helps decide the course.

The student rates you and the facility in the same software. UT Tyler's Preceptor Resources page adds two things for NP preceptors: a record of the hours you precepted each semester, usable toward recertification, and access to the Robert R. Muntz Library.

Is my practice covered for liability when a UT Tyler student sees patients?

UT Tyler students carry malpractice insurance through the university's group policy with Wortham Insurance & Risk Management, billed at registration. The facility's affiliation agreement with UT Tyler sets out each party's role, as Texas Board of Nursing rules expect written agreements among a program, a preceptor and a facility to do.
