No preceptor and the UT Tyler semester is close: what to do this week
Tell your course's lead faculty today, and copy the Clinical Coordinator; UT Tyler's syllabi ask for exactly that kind of early notice. Then spend the week on the leads most likely to clear in time: Texas clinicians in the course's specialty at facilities that already hold a contract with UT Tyler. First, put faculty in the loop, in writing
UT Tyler's Fall 2026 syllabi treat a missing placement as something to report early. Under the PMHNP syllabi, a student struggling with a placement or a preceptor's availability owes the lead faculty prompt notice. The AGACNP practicum syllabus wants both faculty and the Clinical Coordinator told immediately. An FNP syllabus asks you to contact faculty as soon as possible when a site cannot provide the experience the course requires.
Send it from your Patriot Email account, which UT Tyler treats as the official channel for student messages. Name the course, list what you have tried and which leads are still open, and say when you expect answers. Faculty coordinate with students on sites and preceptors, and they can only work with what they know.
UT Tyler does not publish what happens next when a student has no preceptor, so that conversation is where the options for your course get decided.
How close is too close, track by track
In the AGACNP certificate the calendar is the problem. Each 125-hour practicum sits inside one 7-week session, so the syllabus draws its line early: a partial tentative schedule is owed by Friday of Week 2, and a site still unsecured once Week 2 closes puts completing the course in doubt. The other tracks have their own clocks.

Five days, five moves
- Day 1: notify faculty. Email your lead faculty, and copy the Clinical Coordinator, with your status and open leads.
- Day 2: pin down what the course needs. Population, setting, total hours and weekly pace from the syllabus, plus rules such as the PMHNP inpatient minimum or the bar on hospital acute care hours in
NURS 5349. - Day 3: work the warm leads. Earlier preceptors (within UT Tyler's reuse limits), clinicians you have worked beside, and other units of your employer that satisfy the rules on clinicals where you work.
- Day 4: favor sites with a contract already in place. A new affiliation agreement is signed on paper and takes time on the facility's side; CHRISTUS allows 30 to 60 days, according to its clinical education pages. Ask faculty which facilities already have one.
- Day 5: make a clean ask. Give each practice one page: the course number, total hours, weeks, hours per week and UT Tyler's steps (the agreement survey, the Preceptor Handbook, the evaluation), so a yes turns into a filed request quickly.
Shortcuts that cost you later
A rushed placement that breaks a UT Tyler rule costs more time than it saves. Steer clear of these:
- A preceptor in another state, however well you know them: UT Tyler's residence rule keeps NP clinical hours in Texas, as Texas-only clinicals explains
- Your manager, anyone in your line of report, or a relative
- A practice whose patients do not match the course, such as an adult-only office for pediatric hours
- For PMHNP rotations, leaning on telehealth, which counts for at most 63 hours per course and must be done onsite with the preceptor supervising
- A preceptor who agreed on the phone but has not yet seen UT Tyler's survey or your schedule
Shifts worked while approval is pending are not a head start. UT Tyler will not count them, and its PMHNP syllabi say they can lead to disciplinary review.
If the semester opens without a preceptor
Keep faculty updated weekly and ask plainly what your options are for this course. UT Tyler publishes the policies that shape those options, so know them before the conversation.
- Withdrawal: in the MSN, a withdrawal counts as one attempt, and a nursing course can be repeated only once
- Dates: in the Fall 2026 15-week session, census falls on September 10 and the last day to withdraw is November 2; Flex sessions run earlier, per the academic calendar
- Incomplete: its first condition is satisfactory progress in the course, so it is designed for a course already underway; behind on clinical hours explains it

Send your UT Tyler course, county and first class day through the placement request form. Your placement advisor starts with what can clear soonest: Texas preceptors in the course's specialty, at facilities where the contract and onboarding are workable in the time left, who can host your weekly hours from the week approval lands.
You receive the preceptor's details ready for the Self-Placement Request, a preceptor who expects UT Tyler's survey, and an advisor who keeps working the list until your request is filed. Faculty still make the call, and what you put in front of them is complete.
Questions UT Tyler students ask
Will UT Tyler place me if I cannot find a preceptor?
No current UT Tyler page promises that. Graduate students choose clinical sites with faculty approval, and faculty coordinate with you on sites and preceptors. That coordination is real help, which is why early notice matters, but plan on the search itself staying with you or with someone searching on your behalf.
Can I switch to a preceptor in another state if Texas is too hard?
Not for UT Tyler NP clinicals. UT Tyler's graduate nursing page makes Texas residence and Texas clinical hours a condition for NP students, and the PMHNP syllabi extend the rule to the preceptor and the patients. Older UT Tyler pages that point to out-of-state clinicals lag behind the current rule, so plan only on Texas.
Is two weeks before the semester too late to find a preceptor?
Not necessarily, but it narrows the field. A preceptor at a facility that already holds a UT Tyler contract, in a practice that fits the course, can still be proposed and reviewed. A hospital that needs a brand-new agreement usually cannot move that fast. Tell faculty, focus on those sites, and get help making calls.
Can a nurse practitioner at my job precept me if I am stuck?
Possibly, if the NP is not your supervisor or anyone in your line of report and is not related to you. Inside your own health system, a PMHNP rotation has to sit on another unit or service line, with a different manager and preceptor and apart from your paid duties. If you work at a small practice owned by an NP or physician, UT Tyler's FNP syllabi say you will likely rotate somewhere else.
