UT Tyler clinical hours, program by program
UT Tyler's three nurse practitioner tracks, the FNP, the PMHNP and the post-master's AGACNP, each require 750 clinical hours completed in Texas. The post-master's DNP asks for 1,000 practice hours, and the Education and Informatics, Quality and Safety master's tracks count 500. FNP: five clinical courses, each with its own preceptor needs
The 2026-27 catalog puts all 750 FNP hours in five courses. Each has its own guide here, because each calls for a different patient mix: children, then sexual and mental health visits, then adults and older adults, then outpatient primary care for the two internships.

Students who entered before the 750-hour plan follow a 675-hour version with different course numbers, and several Fall 2026 syllabi still print it. The 750 versus 675 breakdown lays the two plans side by side. PMHNP: 750 hours, 500 of them assigned to named courses
The catalog lists six PMHNP clinical courses but prints hours for only four: NURS 5367, NURS 5368, NURS 5370 and NURS 5373, at 125 each. The other two, NURS 5363 on differential diagnosis and NURS 5365 on psychotherapy, count as clinical courses with no published hour figure, and the 2023 preceptor guide puts NURS 5373 at 135 rather than 125.
The practicums run as co-requisite pairs, so PMHNP students carry 250 hours in a single semester twice: NURS 5367 with NURS 5368, then NURS 5370 with NURS 5373. Two program-wide limits shape them: telehealth tops out at 63 hours per clinical course, and 125 or more hours across the program must take place on an inpatient unit. AGACNP and DNP hours run on different clocks
The post-master's AGACNP certificate compresses its 750 hours into six 125-hour practica, NURS 7383 through NURS 7388, one in each 7-week Flex session. Two fall in the first-year summer, two in the second-year fall and two in the second-year spring. A Fall 2026 syllabus recommends about 20 clinical hours a week for each 3-credit practicum, a very different week from an FNP course spread over 15. The AGACNP practicums page has the sequence.
The post-master's DNP counts practice hours rather than direct patient care: at least 1,000, logged in Exxat within 7 days. Earlier post-baccalaureate hours, once approved, may satisfy as much as half of one course's total, and no site hours count, even at your employer, before a fully executed affiliation agreement. Hours that count differently, or not at all
A logged hour is not always a counted hour at UT Tyler. Four rules decide which of yours make it into the total.
- Approval comes first. Policy 7.2 wants sites and preceptors approved before the semester, and the PMHNP syllabi say hours worked before every approval will not count.
- Practice hours are not direct care. Each MSN core course, such as
NURS 5301, carries 10 practice hours without direct patient care. - Some hours are embedded.
NURS 5352Advanced Health Assessment holds 20 hours inside the course. The older FNP plan counted 50 hours fromNURS 5352andNURS 5339toward its 675; the catalog's 750 sentence names only the five clinical courses. - Logging windows differ by track. FNP entries are due within 72 hours and must match the preceptor's signature sheets, one PMHNP syllabus gives both 48 and 72 hours, and DNP entries are due within 7 days.

The costly mistake is starting hours the week a preceptor says yes. Until faculty approval, the Clinical Coordinator's checks and any facility onboarding are finished, every one of those hours is at risk.
The Texas floor under UT Tyler's numbers
Texas sets a minimum of its own. The Board of Nursing's education rules require each APRN track to include at least 500 supervised clinical hours, and its licensure page asks graduates of programs finished on or after January 1, 2003 to show at least 500 separate, non-duplicated clinical hours in each advanced practice role and population focus. Every UT Tyler NP total, the current 750 or the older 675, sits comfortably above that line.
UT Tyler layers a residence rule on top: its NP students reside in Texas and log every APRN clinical hour inside the state, under a Texas or compact RN license. That is why every preceptor search for a UT Tyler NP course starts with a Texas map, not a national list.

Questions UT Tyler students ask
How many clinical hours a week should I plan for at UT Tyler?
It depends on the course. The Fall 2026 NURS 5453 and NURS 5367 syllabi set a 10-hour weekly floor over 15 weeks. The older FNP plan asked for 12 a week in NURS 5455 and 15 in NURS 5347. AGACNP students should allow about 20 a week per practicum, since each lasts 7 weeks.
Do telehealth visits count toward UT Tyler clinical hours?
In the PMHNP they do, up to 63 hours in each clinical course, with you, your preceptor and every patient located in Texas. The 2023 NP preceptor guide also expects telehealth teaching to take place onsite under the preceptor's supervision. For FNP courses, ask your course faculty before you count any virtual visit.
Which document wins if my syllabus and the catalog give different hours?
No UT Tyler page we reviewed settles it. Your section's syllabus and your signed degree plan are the two documents to check, since the plan records which version of the program you follow. When either disagrees with the catalog, ask your course faculty or program coordinator in writing before you build a preceptor schedule around one number.
Do BSN students log clinical hours the same way as graduate students?
No. Pre-licensure BSN students in Tyler, Longview and Palestine are placed by faculty, and each course's clinical hours are set out in its learning management system. For BSN students, UT Tyler counts lab time, simulation, supervised patient care, conferences and observation as clinical hours, following Texas Board of Nursing rules.
Are UT Tyler's DNP practice hours the same as clinical hours?
Not quite. The post-master's DNP asks for 1,000 practice hours tied to its courses and the DNP Project, logged in Exxat, rather than direct patient care in a clinic. BSN to DNP students in the FNP or PMHNP concentrations have a 1,250-hour total, while the IQS, Administration and Education concentrations stay at 1,000.
