The 2026-27 catalog requires 750 direct patient care hours for UT Tyler's MSN FNP and post-master's FNP certificate, spread over five clinical courses. Fall 2026 syllabi written for students who entered earlier still describe a 675-hour program with different course numbers and a fixed split by patient population. Both totals are live for someone, so the first job is knowing which one is yours.

What the 2026-27 catalog requires

UT Tyler's current catalog sets the FNP at 47 credits and 750 direct patient care clinical hours, and it names the five courses that hold those hours: NURS 5453, NURS 5454, NURS 5455, NURS 5347 and NURS 5349. The post-master's FNP certificate runs through the same specialty courses and carries the same 750. The program itself is profiled on the MSN FNP page.

UT Tyler's numbering rule gives you the credits: the second digit of a course number is its credit value. The three primary care courses are 4 credits each and the two internships 3 credits each. The catalog assigns the internships 187.5 hours apiece, and the Fall 2026 syllabi give NURS 5453 and NURS 5454 125 hours each.

One figure is missing. The catalog prints no hour count for NURS 5455 by itself. Taking the other four courses away from 750 leaves 125, but that is our subtraction, not a number UT Tyler has published; the NURS 5455 guide explains how to confirm the figure for your section.

The two plans, course by course

Assessment hours have not vanished from the newer plan: the Fall 2026 NURS 5352 syllabus still lists 20 clinical hours embedded in the course. The catalog's 750 sentence simply names the five clinical courses and nothing else.

The older hour mix: 120, 120 and 435

The 675-hour plan also fixes how hours divide by population. The Fall 2026 NURS 5349 syllabus lists 120 hours of pediatrics, 120 of women's health and 435 of family practice. A Summer 2026 NURS 5455 syllabus gives women's health 75 hours and family practice 480, so two current UT Tyler documents disagree on how much women's health the older plan asks for.

On who supervises those hours, the same internship syllabus recommends that a quarter of all program hours be spent with an advanced practice nurse, leaving the remainder open to physicians (MD or DO) and PAs. UT Tyler's online program pages set a higher bar and expect the majority of clinical time with an APRN. A Fall 2026 FNP syllabus also lets students put 60 of a 120-hour course's hours toward specialty experiences.

For the 750-hour plan we found no population split published beyond each course's own focus: pediatrics, sexual and mental health, adult and geriatric care, then the internships. If your syllabus sets one, it is the split to build your preceptor list around.

Other places UT Tyler's FNP numbers disagree

The 750 against 675 split is the big one, but it is not alone. These smaller mismatches were live on UT Tyler's pages in September 2026.

The body of the Fall 2026 NURS 5453 syllabus still calls NURS 5351 a 125-hour, 15-week course, pairing the old course number with the new hours.

None of this makes one source wrong for everyone. UT Tyler is running two plans at once, and its documents are catching up at different speeds.

Working out which plan you are on

Size your preceptor search to the plan you are actually on. The 75 hours between the two totals is more than half of a primary care course, enough to leave you a preceptor short in your final semester.

What 750 hours means for your preceptor search

The biggest change lands on the FNP internships, which grow from 120 to 187.5 hours each. Over a 15-week semester, 187.5 hours works out to 12.5 hours a week, and taking both internships together, which the catalog allows, doubles that to 25. These are our calculations from UT Tyler's totals, not weekly requirements UT Tyler has published.

Preceptor count matters as much as hours. A UT Tyler InPlace how-to, last captured in 2025, capped FNP students at 240 hours with any single preceptor. If that limit still applies, the 375 internship hours alone call for at least two preceptors, before you count the three primary care courses.

Yes. The 2026-27 catalog gives the certificate the same specialty courses and the same 750 hours as the MSN. What differs is the credit load: certificate students who took the three Ps within the past three years can skip those nine credits by passing a competency exam, which helps explain why the catalog shows a credit range rather than one figure.

Is a 675-hour UT Tyler FNP enough for Texas APRN licensure?

For programs completed after January 1, 2003, the Texas Board of Nursing expects 500 or more clinical hours in the role and population focus, counted without duplication, so 675 clears that bar. Licensure also requires national certification and the Board's other conditions; the certification exams guide covers the boards.

How many FNP hours can I do with one preceptor?

The last figure UT Tyler published is in an InPlace how-to captured in 2025 and since taken offline: up to 240 hours with a single preceptor. UT Tyler's newer Exxat-era documents are silent on it, so confirm with your course faculty. Spreading hours across two or three preceptors also protects you if one practice stops taking students mid-semester.
