Finding a preceptor yourself or with placement help: a fair comparison for UT Tyler students

Both routes finish at the same place: a Self-Placement Request that UT Tyler faculty review on its merits. What differs is who spends the weeks finding and vetting the preceptor. Many UT Tyler students land preceptors through their own contacts; others hand the search to a specialist and put that time into coursework, shifts and family.

What is the same on either route

How you found a preceptor does not change how UT Tyler reviews one. You file the Self-Placement Request, the preceptor answers UT Tyler's agreement survey, faculty judge whether the site can meet the course objectives, and the Clinical Coordinator clears the placement. The standards are fixed as well: a Texas site, a licensed clinician in the right specialty, and nobody who supervises you or is related to you.

Nothing UT Tyler publishes speaks to how a preceptor is located, only to whether the one you propose meets the standard. So the decision below is about your time and your circumstances, not about approval. UT Tyler's own placement rules, word for word, are on the Self-Placement Request page.

What a search on your own takes

Searching yourself is entirely doable, and it is also real work. For a single UT Tyler rotation, plan to:

Build a list of Texas practices in the course's specialty within driving distance of home
Call, email or stop by, often more than once, to reach the clinician rather than the front desk
Confirm the clinician's license, role, specialty and years in advanced practice against UT Tyler's standards
Rule out anyone who supervises you, sits in your chain of report or is family
Find out if the facility has signed a contract with UT Tyler, and what its onboarding involves
Collect the credentials and details the request needs, then keep the preceptor responsive to UT Tyler's survey email

Health systems add their own layer. Tyler's CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances says on its student page that it discourages cold calls for preceptors and expects a preceptor lined up before a rotation request. Houston Methodist's NP student page says it is not currently pursuing new school affiliations.

When your own search is the better choice

Going it alone is often the right call, and many UT Tyler students do it well. It tends to work best when several of these are true:

You already know NPs, physicians or PAs in the specialty from work or an earlier rotation
Your employer is a large system where you can train on another unit under a different manager and preceptor, which the PMHNP rules require; the details are on clinicals where you work
You live in a metro area with many practices in the course's specialty
Your track makes a preceptor optional, as the Informatics, Quality and Safety practicum does with its routes that need no facility placement
You have a semester of slack before the course starts

If your own search stalls, you can change routes at any point. Nothing about the request or the review changes when you do.

When placement help makes the most difference

Some situations stretch a solo search thin. These are the ones where a dedicated search changes the outcome most:

Rural counties, where advanced practice nurses are thin on the ground: the state's 2023 supply report puts nonmetro Texas at 64 APRNs for every 100,000 people, about half the metro rate of 120
Hard-to-find patients: children for NURS 5453, and in NURS 5370 at least 15 hours with patients 12 and under plus 50 adolescent encounters
Inpatient psychiatric hours, with at least 125 required across the PMHNP program
Compressed clocks, like the AGACNP's 125 practicum hours squeezed into a single 7-week session
A full-time job, when clinics answer calls during the same hours you are on shift
A preceptor who withdrew and left you partway through a course

Using both routes across the program

You do not have to pick one route for the whole degree. An FNP student at UT Tyler has five clinical courses, and a PMHNP student has four named practica plus two more clinical courses, and UT Tyler limits how much of the program one preceptor can cover. Several searches are built in either way.

One practical pattern is to cover the familiar rotation through your own network and bring us the one that is scarce where you live, often pediatrics or inpatient psychiatry. Tell us which courses are already covered, and we plan the rest around them through the placement request form.

Questions UT Tyler students ask

Which is faster, searching myself or using placement help?

UT Tyler's side takes the same time either way: the agreement survey, faculty review, any new contract and onboarding. The difference is the search. A placement advisor works the phones full time and checks fit before you hear a name, which tends to shorten the weeks before filing. Your own network can be quicker still when you already know a willing preceptor.

Can UT Tyler give me a list of preceptors?

Older UT Tyler materials described a searchable InPlace database of facilities holding UT Tyler agreements and preceptors who had taught UT Tyler students before. Clinical management has since moved to Exxat, and the how-to for searching facilities is no longer online. Ask your course faculty whether a current list exists. Treat it as a starting point for calls, not a placement.

Why is it so hard to find an NP preceptor in Texas?

Demand for preceptors outruns supply across Texas nursing education. In a 2024 state survey of clinical sites serving pre-licensure programs, a shortage of preceptors was the reason sites most often gave for not accepting more students. NP students draw on many of the same hospitals and clinicians, and advanced practice nurses cluster in metro counties.

Can I start on my own and switch to placement help later?

Yes, and switching early beats switching late. Send the leads you have already contacted, with what each one said, so your advisor skips them and starts where your search stopped. The Self-Placement Request, the survey and faculty review work the same no matter who found the preceptor.
