Who we are
We are placement advisors who spend the working day on one problem: finding a Texas clinician who will precept a UT Tyler student in a specific course, at a site that student can reach. We call practices, confirm licenses and patient mix, and prepare the details a Self-Placement Request asks for.
We start early by design. A search that finishes a semester ahead leaves room for UT Tyler's sign-offs, the facility's contract and the onboarding that follows.
We work for the student. You bring your track and course; we do the searching and checking; you file the request and take the rotation. When a preceptor steps away mid-course, the replacement search comes from the same team that found the first one. Why one university
UT Tyler's clinical process has its own vocabulary and its own rules, and a search is only as good as its grip on them. The Self-Placement Request, Exxat, the Clinical Coordinator's clearance, the Texas residence rule and the FNP's OSCE days around Week 11 each change which preceptors are worth calling, and when.
Course rules narrow the field further. A PMHNP student may keep a preceptor for two rotations at most, needs 125 inpatient hours across the program and can count only 63 telehealth hours per course. NURS 5453 needs young patients, NURS 5349 rules out hospital acute care hours, and each AGACNP practicum fits 125 hours into a 7-week session. Knowing all of this before the first phone call is what lets us bring faculty a preceptor they can approve on the first review.
Working for one School of Nursing also means following one set of documents as they change: the 2026-27 catalog, each semester's syllabi and the move from InPlace to Exxat.
How we see our part
UT Tyler divides clinical placement clearly. Students choose and propose their sites, faculty coordinate and approve, the Clinical Coordinator verifies and clears, and the School of Nursing sets up affiliation agreements with facilities. That model fits the Texas Board of Nursing rules on APRN education, which hold faculty accountable for clinical learning and call for written agreements; the Texas rules page explains them.
Our part is the finding and the preparing. We turn a course number into a willing, qualified preceptor near you, and an empty request into a complete one, early enough for the agreement and onboarding to finish before the semester. The student stays in charge of the request and the rotation, and every judgment about fit belongs to UT Tyler.

How we keep UT Tyler facts accurate
Every UT Tyler fact on this site traces to a UT Tyler document or a Texas rule, listed under Sources at the foot of each page. Our working rules:
- UT Tyler's own sources first: the 2026-27 catalog, the Fall 2026 syllabi, the School of Nursing's clinical policies, program pages and the preceptor guides.
- A date on every source. UT Tyler's preceptor guides were revised in 2022 and 2023 while its syllabi are from Fall 2026, so each fact names the document behind it.
- Conflicts shown as conflicts: 750 or 675 FNP hours, Exxat or InPlace, the Texas-only rule or older out-of-state wording, 125 or 135 hours for
NURS 5373. - Gaps named, never filled. Where UT Tyler has published nothing, such as the Exxat name of the Self-Placement Request, we point you to your syllabus, Canvas or the Clinical Coordinator.
- Results in UT Tyler's name: pass rates appear as figures UT Tyler reports.
- Hospital rules taken from each hospital's own student page, and UT Tyler staff described by role.
When UT Tyler publishes a new catalog or a new semester's syllabi, we re-read the pages that depend on them. Your syllabus, your program coordinator and the Clinical Coordinator always have the final word.
Where we search
UT Tyler's NP students live across Texas, and the Texas-only rule means each search begins in the student's own region, with the drive from home weighed in every match. Our Texas region guides cover eleven areas, from East Texas, UT Tyler's home region around Tyler, Longview and Palestine, to the Rio Grande Valley, the Panhandle and El Paso, with each health system's student rules where it publishes them.

Who will handle my request if I contact you?
A placement advisor on our desk, from the first message onward: confirming your track and course, running the search, briefing the preceptor and staying with you through onboarding. If plans change mid-semester, the same advisor picks the search back up, already knowing your course and your county.
What if this site and a UT Tyler page disagree?
Follow the newer UT Tyler document, which for a clinical course is usually that semester's syllabus, and confirm with your course faculty or program coordinator. Then tell us which page differs so we can check the source and update our guide. Some differences are UT Tyler's own, such as the 750 and 675 FNP totals.
How do you decide which preceptors to propose?
We start from your course number and work outward: patient focus, Texas license, years in the advanced role, board certification, distance from your home and room in the preceptor's week. Anyone who would break UT Tyler's supervisor, relative or rotation limits is set aside before you hear a name. The steps are on how it works.
Can clinicians who want to precept reach you?
Yes. Texas NPs, physicians and PAs can choose "I'm a preceptor (not a student)" on the request form and add their specialty and city. What precepting a UT Tyler student involves, from the agreement survey to the evaluation, is on the for preceptors page.
