UT Tyler FNP internships: NURS 5347 and NURS 5349
UT Tyler's FNP finishes with two 3-credit internships, NURS 5347 and NURS 5349, which the 2026-27 catalog sets at 187.5 clinical hours each, 375 in all. They carry the heaviest hour load in the program, exclude hospital acute care hours from Internship II, and require two passing evaluations from your preceptors.

Two internships, 375 hours
The catalog places NURS 5347 FNP Internship I in the sixth semester of the part-time outline and NURS 5349 FNP Internship II in the final semester, paired with the one-credit NURS 5112 Transitions to Practice. The catalog also allows NURS 5349 to run alongside NURS 5347, which puts both internships in one term.

Where internship hours can happen
The Fall 2026 NURS 5349 syllabus leaves no room on setting: acute care hours in a hospital will not be approved. These are primary care internships, and under the older plan their hours sat inside a 435-hour family practice block. Outpatient family practices, internal medicine and community primary care clinics are the settings we build internship placements around.
The same syllabus restates the FNP conflict rules: no rotations with your supervisor, anyone in your direct line of report or a relative, and students employed at smaller physician- or NP-owned clinics will likely need another site. It also recommends that 25 percent of all program hours be spent with an advanced practice nurse, with physicians and PAs covering the rest, and it requires your clinical instructor to approve every site and preceptor. The preceptor math across two internships
Count preceptors before you count weeks. An archived UT Tyler guide to submitting requests in InPlace, whose latest capture dates from 2025, limited each FNP student to 240 hours with one preceptor. If that rule survives, no single preceptor can carry both internships, which total 375 hours, and a preceptor you used in NURS 5455 may have fewer hours left to give. Confirm the current limit with your course faculty.
Weekly load comes next. Across a 15-week semester, 187.5 hours is 12.5 hours a week; take both internships together and it is 25 hours a week for the whole term. Those are our calculations, not UT Tyler minimums, but the older plan's 15-hour weekly floor for NURS 5347 gives a sense of the pace UT Tyler has asked for before. A working nurse carrying 25 clinical hours a week needs preceptors with predictable schedules and a plan for every cancelled day.
What is graded besides hours
The internship syllabi grade far more than a finished hour count, and they spell out each piece.
- Preceptor evaluations. You need two passing Clinical Performance Evaluations from preceptors, with 80 percent as the passing mark.
- Faculty contact. Faculty arrange an online meeting that includes your preceptor and may turn up at the site without warning.
- The Preceptor Handbook. You give each preceptor UT Tyler's Preceptor Handbook, posted in the Mission Possible course in Canvas, and review it with them.
- Nightly logs. Hours go into InPlace/Exxat each night, within 72 hours, and must match your preceptor's daily signature sheets.
- Exams and board preparation. Exams run under Respondus, with ProctorU Record+ added in
NURS 5347, and FNP Mastery and the APEA University Predictor Exam are required resources.

OSCE week inside the internships
Both internships include an on-campus OSCE in Tyler. For Fall 2026 the NURS 5349 syllabus lists Nov. 9 - 15 as its on-campus window, and both internship syllabi rule out simulation credit for the campus OSCE, so those days add nothing to your 187.5. Plan the clinic weeks on either side from the start. With two internship preceptors there are two schedules to adjust, so give each practice the date at your first meeting.
If you take both internships in one semester, OSCE week lands against a 25-hour weekly pace, so the practical move is to front-load hours in the first ten weeks and keep the final weeks for makeup. The OSCE campus days guide covers timing and travel.

Can I take NURS 5347 and NURS 5349 in the same semester?
The catalog allows it: NURS 5349 may run alongside NURS 5347, with NURS 5112 Transitions to Practice as its co-requisite. Doing both means 375 hours in one term, about 25 a week over 15 weeks by our math, so line up at least two preceptors and have both approved before the semester begins.
Can FNP internship hours be done in a hospital?
Not acute care hospital hours in NURS 5349; the Fall 2026 syllabus says they will not be approved. The internships are primary care experiences. If a practice belongs to a hospital system but runs as an outpatient clinic, describe it clearly in your Self-Placement Request and let faculty decide before you log a single hour there.
What is NURS 5112?
NURS 5112 Transitions to Practice is a one-credit course taken with NURS 5349 in the final semester. It carries no clinical hours, so it does not change your preceptor plan. Students on the older 675-hour plan take the NURS 5382 Capstone in its place, as their degree plan shows.
What score do internship preceptor evaluations need?
The internship syllabi require two passing Clinical Performance Evaluations from preceptors, and 80 percent counts as passing. Your preceptor completes the evaluation through the placement system. Walk through the form with your preceptor early in the term so their expectations and UT Tyler's line up well before the evaluation is due.
Can I keep my NURS 5455 preceptor for the internships?
Returning to a preceptor is possible when faculty approve it and you stay within any single-preceptor limit. A UT Tyler how-to archived in 2025 capped FNP students at 240 hours with one preceptor, and a primary care course plus one internship can approach that quickly. Check the current cap with faculty and plan a second preceptor for the rest.
