UT Tyler's placement rules, quoted in full

These sentences define placement for UT Tyler graduate nursing students. Each is quoted exactly as UT Tyler publishes it, with its document and date, so you can check it yourself.

• Clinical policy 7.3, graduate students: "Graduate students choose clinical sites with their instructor's approval in various settings designed to facilitate meeting their clinical objectives".
• Clinical policy 7.2: "All clinical sites and preceptors must be approved prior to the start of the semester with the clinical coordinator."
• NP Preceptor Guide, revised 1/24/2023: "Students are expected to collaboratively complete the Self-Placement Request form in the InPlace software with information obtained from the preceptor."
• The same guide, on the faculty role: "Faculty will coordinate with the student regarding clinical sites and preceptors" and "Faculty will approve clinical sites and preceptors".
• Clinical policy 7.3, undergraduate students: "Faculty assign clinical placements."

Read together, the rules divide the work plainly. You choose and propose, faculty coordinate and approve, and the clinical coordinator signs off before the term. Pre-licensure BSN students have their placements assigned by faculty instead, which is why the request is a graduate-track form.

What the request needs from your preceptor

The phrase "information obtained from the preceptor" is the working instruction: a clinic's website is not enough to complete the request. The 2023 guide also tells you to ask preceptors for their credentials while filling it out, because faculty and the Clinical Coordinator check those against UT Tyler's preceptor standards.

UT Tyler has not published the field list for the Exxat version, so collect the following before you sit down to file.

Gather these from your preceptor

• Full name, credentials and role: NP, physician (MD or DO) or PA, and for PMHNP courses a psychiatric specialty practice
• License details for Texas, where the preceptor, the patients and you will all be during NP clinical hours
• Years practicing in the advanced role; UT Tyler's 2023 guide asks for at least one, and its online preceptor page asks for two
• The practice or facility name, address and specialty, and the patient ages you will see there
• The email address the preceptor actually reads, since the agreement survey arrives by email
• The days and hours the preceptor can take you, for the clinical schedule you will submit

Check the conflict rules before filing too. UT Tyler rules out precepting by your supervisor, by anyone in your chain of report, or by a relative; details by track are on clinicals where you work, and the full preceptor standards are on preceptor requirements.

When to file, and what happens next

Policy 7.2 sets the outer limit: approval before the semester starts. Approval comes only after your request, the preceptor's survey and faculty review, so file as soon as the preceptor says yes, ideally during the semester before the course.

Expect several requests over the program. UT Tyler's InPlace guide held FNP students to 240 hours with any one preceptor, PMHNP syllabi allow the same preceptor for no more than two rotations, and the same InPlace guide notes that NURS 5329 in the Education track may have two Self Placement Request forms. Each new preceptor starts a fresh request and a fresh round of approvals.

Submitting opens the approval chain rather than closing your part of it. The Clinical Coordinator verifies the preceptor and emails the agreement survey, faculty decide on the site and preceptor, the facility's contract and onboarding are checked, and then you are cleared.
