UT Tyler clinical scheduling rules
A UT Tyler clinical hour counts only when it is approved, scheduled, inside the daily and weekly limits, and logged on time. Sites and preceptors need approval before the semester, NURS 5453 and NURS 5367 each ask for at least 10 hours a week, PMHNP days stop at 11 hours, and logs are due within 72 hours or sooner. Start the semester already approved

Approval comes before the first hour
UT Tyler's clinical policy 7.2 asks for every site and preceptor to be approved with the clinical coordinator before the semester starts. PMHNP syllabi spell out four separate green lights at the start of each clinical semester: Exxat clearance, site approval, schedule approval and faculty approval. Clearing Exxat on its own starts nothing.
Hours logged before every approval arrives do not count, and NURS 5373 warns they may bring disciplinary review. PMHNP students also cannot begin on the first day of class; faculty approval to start usually takes 24 to 48 hours. AGACNP faculty and staff ask for 48 to 72 business hours to process documents, schedules and preceptor approvals, and a placement still missing at the end of Week 2 puts the course at risk. Weekly minimums and daily limits by course
NP clinical courses run the full 15-week semester, except the AGACNP practica, which run one per 7-week Flex session. Here is the pace each syllabus sets, where it sets one.

FNP students on the 750-hour plan should read the pace line in each new syllabus: the catalog gives NURS 5347 and NURS 5349 187.5 hours each, and no posted syllabus yet shows a weekly figure for that version. The 750 vs 675 hour page compares the two plans.
The arithmetic of a 15-week term
This is our arithmetic, not a UT Tyler figure. At the 10-hour weekly minimum, a 125-hour course needs 12.5 weeks of clinical time. A 15-week semester therefore leaves about two and a half weeks of slack, and the approval days at the start, the OSCE week and finals week all come out of it.
The PMHNP semester is tighter. Two 125-hour practica in one term make 250 hours, roughly 17 a week over 15 weeks, and with the 11-hour daily cap that means at least two clinical days in most weeks. AGACNP students fit 125 hours into about seven weeks, close to the 20 hours a week UT Tyler recommends.
Slack disappears at the start of the term, not the end. A preceptor approved before day one lets you log from the week approval lands; one found in Week 2 has already used most of your margin.
Building the schedule with your preceptor
UT Tyler's NP Preceptor Guide expects you to negotiate clinical dates with your preceptor, and faculty approve the schedule that results. Before your first day, hand the preceptor at least three written, measurable objectives for the site, as the NURS 5455 syllabus requires. If the arrangement changes later, you revise the schedule and resubmit it to faculty.
Build in margin from the start. The NURS 5373 syllabus strongly recommends booking extra hours to cover preceptor availability and cancellations, and AGACNP students may reschedule up to three student-initiated clinical days a term. The Summer 2026 NURS 5370 syllabus bars clinical time over university holidays, breaks and finals week.
Block the campus dates first. FNP OSCEs usually fall around Week 11, and the Fall 2026 NURS 5349 syllabus lists November 9 to 15 on campus. PMHNP students have up to two hands-on experiences at the main campus. The OSCE page covers planning around them.
Logging deadlines and what faculty check
When each track logs its hours
- FNP: into InPlace/Exxat within 72 hours, matching the preceptor's daily signature sheet
- PMHNP:
NURS 5373says within 72 hours on one page and within 48 hours of each shift on another, and the Summer 2026NURS 5370syllabus says 72; logging inside 48 hours meets every version - DNP: within 7 days, in Exxat
- AGACNP: the clinical schedule and a "Good to Go" email for each site and preceptor uploaded before you start
Faculty may spot-check clinical sessions, and UT Tyler treats falsified or misrepresented hours as an academic integrity violation. The hours in the clinical software and the preceptor's signed sheets have to match, so log from the signed sheet, not from memory at the end of the week.
The 2026-27 School of Nursing calendar
The School of Nursing runs its own calendar, a few days apart from the university's. Full-semester clinical courses use the 15-week column; AGACNP practica use the Flex columns.

Questions UT Tyler students ask
Can I finish UT Tyler clinical hours after the semester ends?
Only through an Incomplete, which UT Tyler grants when you have been making satisfactory progress and circumstances beyond your control stop you from finishing. The remaining work has a one-year limit, after which the grade becomes an F. The conditions and the School's form are on the grades and time limits page.
Do UT Tyler OSCE days count as clinical hours?
UT Tyler's syllabi disagree. NURS 5353 says on-campus OSCEs count as clinical hours, while NURS 5347 and NURS 5349 say simulation hours will not be given for them. Ask your course faculty which applies to your section before you plan the semester's hours around the campus visit.
What if my preceptor cancels a week of clinical days?
Tell course faculty, rebuild the schedule and resubmit it, since UT Tyler expects you to revise the schedule whenever the preceptor arrangement changes. AGACNP students may move up to three student-initiated days a term. Booking extra hours at the start, as the PMHNP syllabus advises, is what absorbs a lost week.
Can I work 12-hour clinical shifts in the UT Tyler PMHNP program?
No. PMHNP syllabi cap clinical experiences at 11 hours in any 24-hour period, so agree on days of 11 hours or fewer with your preceptor. The FNP and AGACNP syllabi in UT Tyler's public set do not print the same cap; check your own syllabus before planning long days.
Is there a deadline to file my Self-Placement Request?
UT Tyler's public materials give none beyond approval before the semester starts. Facilities add their own: CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances lists March 1, July 1 and November 1 for rotations starting a month later, according to its student page.
