How the RN to BSN is built
UT Tyler's catalog names three tracks to the Bachelor of Science in Nursing: the campus BSN, the concurrent ADN-BSN and the RN-BSN. The RN-BSN is the one for nurses who already hold a license. It adds 30 UT Tyler hours, designed as two semesters of full-time study, and every course is online.
Courses run in 7-week sessions, two in each semester, so you finish one short course and move straight to the next. UT Tyler lists six entry points a year, which matches the School of Nursing's pattern of two 7-week Flex sessions in each of fall, spring and summer. The academic calendar page has the 2026-27 session dates.
Course numbers carry the RNBS prefix. One of them, RNBS 3315, is the only course School of Nursing policy lets you take before your license question is settled; the license section below explains why that matters for new graduates.
Clinical work without a preceptor
The Fall 2026 RN-BSN syllabi contain no preceptor practicum. Clinical learning comes from self-directed projects you complete in your own community and online, and your course faculty grade them.
Two courses show the style. RNBS 4601 includes a community windshield survey. RNBS 4631 counts a TeamSTEPPS module as 40 clinical hours and awards a certificate of completion when your discussion board scores average 80. Each syllabus lists the projects that carry clinical credit, so the plan for your clinical hours is already written when the course opens in Canvas.
The RN-BSN page still carries UT Tyler's standard caution that reciprocity agreements may affect clinical hours for out-of-state applicants. That sentence appears across UT Tyler's online program pages; for the RN-BSN, the license rules below are the part to check first.
The one thing RN-BSN students get wrong is assuming there is a clinical placement to arrange. The clinical hours are built into course projects, and your syllabus names each one.
Which RN license you need
UT Tyler's sources disagree on this point, so read all three before you apply.
- The RN-BSN program page lists an active, unencumbered Registered Nurse license in Texas among its admission requirements
- The 2026-27 catalog asks for a current, active, unencumbered license in the state where you reside and practice
- School of Nursing BSN policy 4.7 requires licensure in your state of residence before any course other than
RNBS 3315
If you live and work in Texas, all three agree. If you live elsewhere, the catalog and the policy describe a home-state license while the program page names Texas, so ask UT Tyler admissions which one your application will be checked against. RN license requirements tracks this wording across UT Tyler programs.
Studying from another state
UT Tyler's distance-education list covers all 50 states, which lets the RN-BSN accept online students across the country, with conditions. The District of Columbia is missing from that list, even though UT Tyler's introduction to it says the university sought authorization there.
Licensure disclosures follow the "Nursing B.S.N." entry on UT Tyler's professional licensure chart. It says yes for 15 states: Alabama, Arkansas, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Michigan, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Washington and Wisconsin. Every other state is undetermined, and UT Tyler directs applicants from those states to its admissions office. The chart covers every BSN track, not the RN-BSN alone. State authorization has the details state by state.
UT Tyler publishes no relocation rule for nursing students, so if you expect to move mid-program, raise it with your advisor before the move rather than after.
Other routes: the concurrent ADN-BSN and the RN-MSN
The concurrent ADN-BSN is for students still enrolled in a Texas associate degree program that partners with UT Tyler: Dallas College, Kilgore, Panola, Tarrant, Trinity Valley Community College and Tyler Junior College. You take the same 30 hours of RNBS courses online in 7-week sessions while you finish the ADN, with fall and spring starts. Its catalog page mentions clinical assignments based on the availability of learning experiences without saying more, so ask the program what that means for your plan.
The RN-MSN reaches further. UT Tyler says associate-degree RNs may be eligible for early admission into its non-APRN graduate programs: the MSN in Nursing Administration, the MSN in Nursing Education and the MSN in Informatics, Quality and Safety. Those tracks include practicums with preceptors or mentors, so the placement questions arrive sooner on that route.
Planning ahead for nurse practitioner school
If the RN-BSN is your step toward UT Tyler's MSN FNP or PMHNP, three admission details are worth knowing now.
- The FNP asks for a BSN, a 3.0 GPA on your last 60 undergraduate hours and a statistics course passed with a C or better
- APRN-seeking applicants need a Texas RN license, and NP students must live in Texas and complete every clinical hour there
- The personal statement must describe your thoughts and plans for securing preceptors throughout the program
That last item is where early planning pays off. UT Tyler designs the 30 hours as two semesters of full-time study, taught in 7-week sessions. Its pages do not publish a part-time timeline, so if you plan to take fewer courses while working, map the sequence with your advisor. With six entry points a year, you can begin close to when you are ready rather than waiting for fall.
Can I start RN to BSN courses before my RN license is issued?
Only one of them. School of Nursing BSN policy 4.7 says licensure in your state of residence must be in place before you take any course other than RNBS 3315. A new graduate still waiting on a license can begin with that course and continue with the rest of the sequence once the license is issued.
What is the windshield survey in UT Tyler's RN to BSN?
It is a community assessment assignment in RNBS 4601. UT Tyler's syllabus describes it as a survey conducted from a car that gives a visual overview of a community. You record what you observe as you travel through the area and use it in your course work; the syllabus sets the exact prompts and how it is graded.
Does UT Tyler's RN to BSN have any campus visits?
None appear in UT Tyler's RN-BSN materials. The program page says all courses are offered completely online over two 7-week sessions each semester, and the clinical work is project-based, so you can complete it from home and in your own community. The on-campus experience at UT Tyler belongs to the pre-licensure BSN instead.
