RN license requirements for UT Tyler nursing programs
UT Tyler's nurse practitioner tracks now ask for a Texas RN license, a rule the 2026-27 catalog added, while the School's graduate page still speaks of an unencumbered compact or Texas license. The non-APRN master's tracks want a license wherever your practicum happens, and the RN to BSN carries two different wordings. Here is each program's rule with its source and date, and the places the pages conflict.

Which license each UT Tyler program asks for
Every UT Tyler program for licensed nurses asks for proof of a current, unencumbered RN license at admission. What differs is the state that issued it, and for NP tracks the answer is now Texas.

The 2026-27 catalog's Texas license rule
The 2026-27 catalog added one sentence to its MSN, certificate and BSN-DNP admission sections: non-APRN-seeking candidates may hold a license in the state or states of their practicum, but APRN-seeking candidates must hold a Registered Nursing license in the state of Texas. The 2025-26 catalog did not carry it. The certificate version drops a verb ("must a Registered Nursing license"), a typo that does not change the meaning.
The PMHNP pages had already moved this way. The MSN PMHNP page asks for proof of an unencumbered RN license in Texas, and the post-master's PMHNP certificate page tells every student to obtain a valid Texas license because all clinical hours are completed in Texas.
Older pages still ask for a license in the state where the clinical practicum occurs: the FNP program page, the NP and AGACNP certificate pages and the BSN-DNP PMHNP pathway. Read them alongside the Texas-only clinical rule: for an NP student, the practicum state is Texas.
Compact licenses: where UT Tyler's pages differ
The School of Nursing's graduate page ties APRN clinical hours to an "unencumbered compact or Texas Registered Nurse license", and the nurse anesthesia page accepts a compact license with multistate privileges that include Texas. The 2026-27 catalog and the PMHNP certificate page ask for a Texas license. Those cannot all be the last word for an applicant who holds another state's multistate license.
Texas implemented the Nurse Licensure Compact on January 19, 2018, and when you later apply for your Texas APRN license, the Texas Board of Nursing accepts either Texas RN licensure or RN licensure with compact privilege. The open question is only UT Tyler's admission rule for its NP tracks, so get your program coordinator's answer in writing before you apply.
Students who read the FNP program page see "state(s) where clinical practicum will occur" and assume any state works. For NP tracks that state is Texas, and the 2026-27 catalog now says Texas license outright.
Non-APRN master's and DNP tracks
Nursing Administration, the MSN/MBA, Nursing Education, Informatics, Quality and Safety, and their post-baccalaureate certificates follow the practicum-state rule: hold an RN license wherever your practicum happens. That is why these online programs can enroll nurses outside Texas. UT Tyler also holds approval from Washington's Nursing Care Quality Assurance Commission for Administration and MSN/MBA practice experiences in that state.
The post-master's DNP lets you complete practice hours in a location you choose. BSN to DNP candidates in Administration or Education follow the practicum-state rule, while those in an NP concentration fall under the Texas rule. RN to BSN and BSN students
The RN to BSN program page asks for an active, unencumbered Registered Nurse license in Texas, while the catalog asks for a current license in the state where you live and practice. BSN policy 4.7 agrees with the catalog and adds timing: licensure in your state of residence must be in place before any course other than RNBS 3315. The program is online with project-based clinical work rather than a preceptor placement; see the RN to BSN page.
Pre-licensure BSN students on the Tyler, Longview and Palestine campuses are not yet licensed. Their clinicals run under Texas rules for pre-licensure programs, faculty assign the placements, and preceptors in those programs hold Texas licensure or a privilege to practice in Texas.
Keeping your license clear during the program
- Admission: for licensed nurses, UT Tyler verifies current licensure before admission is considered (policy 2.4.4).
- Restrictions: a nurse with a current license restriction, or one who receives a restriction after admission, must contact the appropriate program director (policy 2.4.4).
- Registration: the Nursing Student Guide 2025-2026 holds registration for the next semester unless your nursing license is current, along with CPR and immunizations.
- Clearance: your license sits in your compliance file with the other clinical requirements, in Exxat for graduate students. The compliance checklist lists the rest.
A lapse or a new restriction is easier to handle early. If either happens mid-program, tell your program director before your next clinical day rather than after.
How the license rule shapes your preceptor search
Because NP clinicals stay in Texas, so does our search. Your placement advisor proposes Texas sites and preceptors who hold an active, unencumbered license to practice in Texas, and checks that license before the preceptor's details go into your Self-Placement Request.
PMHNP searches also confirm that the facility itself is Texas-licensed, which the PMHNP page asks for alongside the preceptor's license. DNP-Nurse Anesthesia is the exception to all of this: that program lists its own East Texas hospitals, so a placement search has little to add there.
For non-APRN tracks outside Texas, the practicum state is matched to the license you hold, so the request faculty see already fits the catalog rule. Start on the request form.
Questions UT Tyler students ask
Do I need a Texas APRN license before my UT Tyler clinicals?
No. NP students train under their RN license. The APRN license comes after graduation: the Texas Board of Nursing asks for Texas RN licensure or a compact privilege, national certification in your role and population, and a qualifying program. I hold a multistate license from another compact state. Can I apply to UT Tyler's FNP?
UT Tyler NP students must live in Texas, and the 2026-27 catalog asks APRN-seeking candidates for a Texas RN license, though the graduate page mentions compact licenses. If you are moving to Texas, ask the MSN FNP Coordinator or admissions which license you must hold by enrollment, and keep the reply.
I live in Louisiana. Do I need a Texas license for UT Tyler's MSN in Nursing Administration?
Under the 2026-27 catalog, no: a non-APRN candidate may hold the license of the state where the practicum takes place, so a Louisiana practicum under a Louisiana license fits the rule. Louisiana is on UT Tyler's distance education list, and the licensure chart covers the program's recognition by state.
Does an RN to BSN student outside Texas need a Texas license?
UT Tyler's pages disagree. The program page asks for a Texas license, but the catalog and BSN policy 4.7 ask for a license in the state where you live and practice, required before any course beyond RNBS 3315. Ask admissions which wording applies to your start term before you enroll.
Does my UT Tyler preceptor need a Texas license too?
For NP tracks, yes. The PMHNP page requires a Texas-licensed practitioner at a Texas-licensed facility, and the NP Preceptor Guide asks for a license in the state where you train, which is Texas.
