UT Tyler State Authorization: Who Can Enroll From Outside Texas

UT Tyler's nurse practitioner tracks are Texas only: you must reside in Texas and do every clinical hour inside the state. Online non-APRN programs, such as the RN to BSN and the MSN in Administration, Education or Informatics, Quality and Safety, accept students from other states with conditions, and UT Tyler's two licensure disclosures do not fully agree.

The answer, program by program

UT Tyler answers two separate questions on separate pages: whether you may study from your state, and whether the program is recognized for licensure there. This table puts both side by side, using UT Tyler's own pages as they read in September 2026.

Why every NP track is Texas only

The governing rule sits on UT Tyler's graduate nursing page, which ties APRN clinical hours to an unencumbered Texas or compact RN license and to Texas residence, with every hour completed in-state. For the BSN to DNP, the MSN and the post-master's certificates, the 2026-27 catalog goes further and requires APRN-track applicants to hold a Texas RN license.

Psychiatric students face the tightest wording. The PMHNP page requires a Texas-licensed site and a Texas-licensed preceptor for each practicum, and the practicum syllabi add that preceptor, student and patients must all be located in Texas. DNP-Nurse Anesthesia accepts a Texas license or a compact license that includes Texas.

Some UT Tyler pages still sound looser: the FNP page mentions preceptors near your home, and the certificate pages warn out-of-state applicants about reciprocity agreements. The graduate nursing page and three catalog sections set the Texas-only rule, and they decide.

Online non-APRN programs: other states, with conditions

Outside the NP tracks, UT Tyler enrolls online students from other states, provided the state is on its distance-education list and you meet the license condition for your program.

MSN Administration, Education, and Informatics, Quality and Safety: an RN license valid wherever the practicum takes place, checked before admission.
MSN/MBA and the post-baccalaureate Administration certificate: the same license rule, plus approval from Washington's Nursing Care Quality Assurance Commission for UT Tyler to run practice experiences in Washington for these programs and the MSN Administration.
Post-master's DNP and the BSN to DNP Administration and Education pathways: clinical work in a location of your choice, an RN license where the practicum occurs, and a fully executed affiliation agreement before any site hours, your employer included.
RN to BSN: the catalog and School of Nursing BSN policy call for licensure in your home state, where you reside and work, held before any course beyond RNBS 3315. The RN to BSN web page conflicts, listing a Texas license.

Several of these pages also carry a caution for applicants outside Texas about reciprocity arrangements that could affect clinical hours. Confirm your own state's practicum rules before you enroll.

The distance-education list and SARA

UT Tyler's state authorization page explains that teaching online in another state means meeting that state's requirements, and that the UT System made a good-faith effort to gain authorization in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Its list of states authorized for distance education names all 50 states, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

UT Tyler also participates in the State Authorization Reciprocity Agreements. The NC-SARA directory lists The University of Texas at Tyler as a participating institution, not on provisional status, with the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board as its state portal entity.

Two details do not line up: the authorized list includes California, which has not joined SARA, and omits the District of Columbia, which has. UT Tyler also treats authorization and licensure separately, linking from its state authorization page to a separate professional licensure page.

Two licensure disclosures that disagree

UT Tyler publishes a university chart, Programs with Professional Licensure/Certification (updated June 2026), and a School of Nursing State Requirements page (updated May 2025). They give different answers.

The School of Nursing page covers the whole school. It places only Washington in its meets-requirements group, with a note tied to the Administration programs, leaves its does-not-meet group empty, and lists the other 48 states as undetermined; Texas and the District of Columbia are absent. A footnote refers out-of-state applicants to the Board of Nursing website.

The chart is newer and program-specific, so it is the better guide, though neither page speaks for your state's board. Programs missing from the chart altogether, such as the MSN PMHNP, the post-master's NP certificates, the MSN/MBA and the BSN to DNP pathways, get no program-level answer; the chart sends questions about anything not shown to admissions.

The FNP's "all states" entry describes where the credential may lead after graduation, not where you may train. FNP students still need Texas residence and a Texas site for every hour.

If you move during the program

UT Tyler publishes no relocation rule for nursing students. The state authorization page, both licensure disclosures, the School of Nursing policy series and the 2026-27 catalog are all silent on moving, so the existing rules apply by implication.

NP students: leaving Texas would break the residency rule for APRN clinical hours, and UT Tyler does not say what happens next.
RN to BSN students: you need a license in the state where you live before taking courses beyond RNBS 3315.
Other non-APRN graduate students: your RN license has to cover the state where the practicum happens.

Before any move across a state line, talk it through with your program coordinator, ideally before a lease or a new job is signed. A move planned around a semester break is far easier to absorb than one that lands in the middle of a clinical course.

Questions UT Tyler students ask

Can I live in Oklahoma or Louisiana and do UT Tyler's online FNP?

No. UT Tyler's NP tracks require Texas residence and Texas clinical hours, and the 2026-27 catalog wants a Texas RN license from anyone applying to an APRN track. The FNP page still mentions preceptors near your home, but the graduate nursing page and the catalog set the rule.

Will a UT Tyler FNP degree let me practice in another state later?

UT Tyler's chart lists the FNP MSN as leading to licensure everywhere, while the School of Nursing's 2025 page lists 48 states as undetermined and points out-of-state applicants to the Board of Nursing website. Check with the board in the state where you plan to practice before you enroll.

Does UT Tyler accept online nursing students from Washington, D.C.?

UT Tyler's distance-education list names all 50 states, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands but leaves out the District of Columbia, even though the page's introduction says authorization was sought there, and DC is a SARA member. Enrollment from DC is not published either way, so ask UT Tyler admissions before applying.

Can I use a compact license for UT Tyler NP clinicals?

For APRN clinical hours, the graduate nursing page takes either an unencumbered Texas RN license or a compact one, and DNP-Nurse Anesthesia takes a compact license covering Texas. The 2026-27 catalog is stricter at admission and names a Texas RN license for APRN-track candidates. Confirm with admissions which standard applies to your application.

Can I move out of Texas partway through UT Tyler's PMHNP program?

UT Tyler has no published rule for students who move, but PMHNP practicums require the preceptor, the student and the patients to be in Texas, so leaving the state would put your clinical courses outside the rule. Talk to the PMHNP program coordinator before any move, and time it around a semester without clinicals.
