What the DNP-Nurse Anesthesia is
UT Tyler's DNP-Nurse Anesthesia combines two credentials in one doctorate. The program page describes a 36-month, intensive program in which graduates earn dual certification as an Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (AGACNP) and a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) at the same time. The catalog is direct about the format: the program is in person.
That sets it apart from nearly everything else in UT Tyler's graduate catalog. The online post-master's DNP, the BSN to DNP paths and the standalone AGACNP certificate all ask students to propose their own preceptors and sites for faculty approval. Nurse anesthesia students train at the program's clinical sites instead, and the program page publishes that list.
The anesthesia program also has its own accreditation cycle. UT Tyler's page states that the next review by the COA is scheduled for Fall 2030. The accreditation page explains how that sits alongside the CCNE accreditation UT Tyler reports for its nursing degrees.
Credits and clinical hours: two published versions
UT Tyler publishes two sets of numbers for this program, and they have not been reconciled. The difference is in the credits and in how the acute care practicum hours are packaged.

By our arithmetic, the program page's two minimums add up to the catalog's 2,750 hours, so the clinical total agrees even though the structure does not. The 375-hour figure for NURS 7392 comes from a Summer 2026 syllabus, which suggests the two-course structure is the one running now. The version that governs you is your cohort's degree plan; ask the program which applies if the two ever differ on your transcript.
Where clinical training happens
Under the question "Where are the Clinical Sites located?", UT Tyler's nurse anesthesia page lists the program's clinical sites: about 17 hospitals and surgery centers across East Texas. The list starts with UT Health Tyler in Tyler and includes sites in Longview, Jacksonville, Quitman, Henderson, Athens and Pittsburg, reaching as far as Lufkin and Livingston.
The page does not describe how students are matched to individual sites or how often rotations change. What it makes clear is that training spans a wide stretch of the region, and UT Tyler's clinical policy makes students responsible for their own transportation to clinical sites. Where you live during the program, and how far you can reasonably drive before an early start, matter more here than in any online track. The common mix-up: reading about UT Tyler's NP self-placement process and assuming it applies here. For DNP-Nurse Anesthesia the clinical sites come from the program's list, and your job is to arrive cleared, licensed and ready on the first day of each rotation.
License and residence rules
The program page asks for a current, unencumbered RN license in the State of Texas, or a compact license with multistate privileges that includes Texas. UT Tyler's graduate clinical requirements say the same about license type for all APRN clinical hours, and they add a residence rule: APRN students live in Texas for the whole program and train only at Texas sites. For a program built around East Texas hospitals, residence is rarely the hard part.
There is one wrinkle between sources. The 2026-27 catalog's MSN, certificate and BSN to DNP pages call for a Texas RN license from anyone seeking APRN licensure and say nothing of compact privileges, while the nurse anesthesia page, updated in September 2026, keeps the compact option. If you hold a compact license from another state and plan to move to East Texas, confirm with the program which rule it applies at admission. Compliance to have ready before rotations
Every clinical site expects UT Tyler's graduate compliance items to be complete and current before you set foot in it. The School of Nursing's policies list:
- A background check with a clear report, or a Texas Board of Nursing letter certifying that any criminal history is not a danger to the public
- A drug screen at a School of Nursing-designated testing facility, at your own expense, with random and for-cause screens possible
- Immunizations: yearly influenza, the hepatitis B series with a positive titer, MMR, Tdap within ten years, varicella and yearly TB testing by two-step skin test or IGRA
- BLS for healthcare providers, through the American Heart Association or American Red Cross
- Health insurance, which the UT System requires for students in clinical courses, and professional liability coverage billed at registration
- A UT Tyler student ID, the P2 Card, and a nursing badge

Is UT Tyler's nurse anesthesia program online?
No. The catalog describes the DNP-Nurse Anesthesia as an in-person program, and its clinical training takes place at hospitals and surgery centers in East Texas. That makes it different from UT Tyler's post-master's DNP and its BSN to DNP concentrations, which are delivered online with occasional campus activities such as intensives and the DNP Project presentation.
How is the DNP-Nurse Anesthesia different from UT Tyler's AGACNP certificate?
The AGACNP certificate is a 30-credit, two-year post-master's program with six 125-hour practica, a fall start and preceptors that students secure themselves, with a placement expected by the end of Week 2. The DNP-Nurse Anesthesia embeds acute care NP training inside a 36-month in-person doctorate that also leads to the CRNA credential, with clinical sites drawn from the program's list.
When does UT Tyler's DNP-Nurse Anesthesia start, and how many students does it admit?
UT Tyler has not published start terms or cohort sizes for the program in the sources reviewed here. The program page and the catalog are the places to watch, and the program can confirm its next cohort. Plan your compliance items and your Texas license well ahead of any start date, because those take the longest to fix.
Does UT Tyler publish pass rates for nurse anesthesia graduates?
Not in the sources reviewed here. UT Tyler reports first-time certification results for its FNP and PMHNP graduates, but it has not posted AGACNP or CRNA pass rates. If outcomes weigh on your decision, ask the program directly; the certification exams page covers the results UT Tyler does report.
Does the nurse anesthesia DNP lead to licensure outside Texas?
UT Tyler's licensure chart does not list the program by name. Its Doctor of Nursing Practice entry says the degree meets requirements in Texas and does not in Georgia, leaving other states undetermined. Because the program trains you in Texas, check the rules of any state where you plan to practice later; state authorization sets out UT Tyler's disclosures.
