UT Tyler NP clinicals in the Rio Grande Valley
The Valley sits roughly 555 miles from Tyler, yet UT Tyler NP students who live here train here. Its largest physician-owned system states outright that it does not assign preceptors, and most other Valley hospitals publish no student process at all. Four counties, 1.44 million people
This guide covers Cameron, Hidalgo and Willacy, the Lower Rio Grande Valley Development Council's counties, plus Starr, which the Census Bureau groups with McAllen. The four counties held 1,441,785 residents in 2025, led by Brownsville (about 193,000), McAllen (151,000), Edinburg (111,000), Mission, Pharr and Harlingen. Rio Grande City and Raymondville anchor the smaller micropolitan areas, and all four counties sit in the U.S.-Mexico border zone.
The trip to Tyler is long: roughly 505 miles from Harlingen, 530 from Brownsville, 555 from McAllen and 570 from Rio Grande City, close to ten hours. You make that drive only for campus dates such as FNP OSCE days; clinical hours are earned near home under UT Tyler's Texas-only rule.
DHR Health's route, step by step
DHR Health in Edinburg, with its main hospital (Doctors Hospital at Renaissance), women's, behavioral and rehabilitation hospitals and DHR Health Brownsville, publishes the Valley's most explicit student rules. Its Student Affairs page reports more than 100 academic affiliations and over 2,000 learners a year, and lays out a sequence that runs alongside UT Tyler's own approvals.
- Confirm the affiliationDHR offers rotations only to students from its affiliate or partner institutions, and only in certain degree programs, so ask your course faculty whether UT Tyler qualifies.
- Secure a preceptorDHR says it does not assign preceptors. The school's academic or placement coordinator helps, but the preceptor has to be found.
- School sends the requestOnce a preceptor agrees, the school's coordinator emails a formal placement request to DHR Student Affairs.
- Finish UT Tyler's sideYour Self-Placement Request, faculty approval and the Clinical Coordinator's clearance all have to be done before the semester, or the hours will not count.
What the other Valley hospitals publish
Valley Baptist (Tenet), with hospitals in Harlingen and Brownsville and a micro-hospital in Weslaco, posts a student orientation page written for school clinical groups: an online hospital orientation, a confidentiality agreement, and attestations of drug screen, background check, BLS and immunizations, returned by the clinical instructor two weeks before the start. It says nothing about NP preceptors.
Driscoll Children's Hospital Rio Grande Valley opened in Edinburg on May 24, 2024 as the region's first freestanding children's hospital. Driscoll manages student placements through myClinicalExchange, with access for approved affiliate schools through the school coordinator.
Research found no student page for South Texas Health System's McAllen and Edinburg hospitals, HCA's Rio Grande Regional and Valley Regional, Prime's Mission Regional, Knapp and Harlingen Medical Center, or Starr County Memorial. The Harlingen-based VA system, with clinics in McAllen and Brownsville, lists only a psychology internship. At these hospitals, a willing preceptor plus UT Tyler's affiliation agreement is the way in.
Shortages and the Valley's preceptor pool
Every one of the four counties is a county-wide geographic mental health HPSA. For primary care, Starr is a county-wide geographic HPSA scoring 20 of 25, Willacy carries a low-income designation, and Cameron and Hidalgo are designated tract by tract. DSHS reports 27% of border residents uninsured against 17% in the rest of Texas, and the state nursing workforce center counted 87 APRNs per 100,000 border residents against 118 elsewhere.
Three health center organizations run 23 sites: Nuestra Clínica del Valle in San Juan, Mission, Roma, Edinburg and Mercedes; Su Clínica in Harlingen, Raymondville, Santa Rosa and Brownsville; and Brownsville Community Health Clinic in Brownsville and Laguna Vista. UT Health RGV, UTRGV's clinical practice, has over 120 physicians at 20 Valley locations, though research found no published route for NP students.
UT Tyler students also share the pool with local learners: UTRGV's School of Nursing offers its own MSN FNP, post-master's FNP and PMHNP certificates and a DNP, and DHR alone reports more than 2,000 learners a year. Starting a semester ahead is the practical answer.

Questions UT Tyler students ask
Will DHR Health assign me a preceptor?
No. DHR's Student Affairs page says it does not assign preceptors for prospective rotations and offers rotations only to students of its affiliate or partner institutions in certain degree programs. The school coordinator confirms the affiliation and sends the request once a preceptor agrees. Ask your UT Tyler course faculty whether the affiliation is in place before you propose a DHR preceptor.
Does Valley Baptist take nurse practitioner students?
Its student orientation page covers school clinical groups and the documents their instructors return two weeks before clinicals, but it says nothing about NP preceptors, affiliation agreements or individual graduate students. Treat a Valley Baptist preceptor as a proposal your UT Tyler faculty and the Clinical Coordinator must clear, with an affiliation agreement if one is not already in place.
Can I log hours at a clinic in Reynosa or Matamoros?
No. Every UT Tyler NP clinical hour has to be earned in Texas by a student who lives in Texas, and the PMHNP syllabi go further, placing preceptor, student and patients inside the state. A shift in Reynosa or Matamoros adds nothing to your log, however close it sits to McAllen or Brownsville.
How long is the drive from McAllen to UT Tyler?
Roughly 555 miles, just under ten hours, with Harlingen a little closer at about 505. OSCE days for FNP students typically land around Week 11, so an overnight stay in Tyler is worth planning. The OSCE days guide covers what those campus visits involve.
