NP clinicals in Corpus Christi, Victoria and the Coastal Bend
The Coastal Bend stretches across 18 counties with fewer than 800,000 people, Corpus Christi at one end and Victoria at the other, and only two of its health systems publish a student route. For a UT Tyler nurse practitioner student, that makes the preceptor, not the hospital, the place to begin. This guide covers what those systems say, where the shortages run deepest and which local settings fit each UT Tyler course.

Eighteen counties between Victoria and the border
This guide joins two planning regions: the 11 Coastal Bend Council of Governments counties around Corpus Christi and the seven Golden Crescent counties around Victoria. Together that is Aransas, Bee, Brooks, Calhoun, DeWitt, Duval, Goliad, Gonzales, Jackson, Jim Wells, Kenedy, Kleberg, Lavaca, Live Oak, Nueces, Refugio, San Patricio and Victoria, with 783,686 residents in 2025. Corpus Christi counts about 317,000 of them and Victoria about 66,500, ahead of Kingsville, Portland, Alice, Beeville, Rockport and Port Lavaca.
Which end you live at decides the trip to Tyler for FNP OSCE days: roughly 265 miles from Gonzales, 295 from Victoria and 395 from Corpus Christi, close to eight hours on the road. Brooks, Duval and Kenedy counties fall inside the U.S.-Mexico border zone, where DSHS reports higher uninsured rates than the rest of Texas.
Who publishes a student route on the Coastal Bend
CHRISTUS Spohn is the largest system, with Shoreline and South in Corpus Christi and hospitals in Alice, Beeville and Kingsville. It has no rotation page of its own. CHRISTUS handles every school through a system-level Clinical Education Affiliation Agreement, asks a current student's faculty advisor to name the training site and contact its office, and estimates 30 to 60 days on average for most review steps. No learner starts until the agreement is fully executed.
Driscoll Children's Hospital in Corpus Christi is the one system here that names a placement tool: it runs student placements through myClinicalExchange. Students of an approved affiliate school get access through their school coordinator, and everyone else starts with Driscoll's Center for Professional Development and Practice. The page does not address NP preceptors.
Research found no student page for Corpus Christi Medical Center (HCA's Bay Area, Doctors Regional and Bayview behavioral campuses), for Citizens Medical Center or DeTar in Victoria, or for the smaller hospitals in Port Lavaca, Cuero, Gonzales, Yoakum, Hallettsville and Edna. The VA's Corpus Christi clinics list only a psychology internship; nurse trainees come through a school's VA academic affiliation. At each of these, a preceptor who agrees comes first and UT Tyler's affiliation agreement with the facility follows.
At CHRISTUS Spohn the approach comes from your school, not from you: CHRISTUS wants the faculty advisor of an enrolled student to name the site and open the agreement paperwork. Have your preceptor's yes in hand before faculty make that call.
Shortage counties, rural hospitals and health centers
Every one of the 18 counties carries a county-wide primary care designation from HRSA. Eight of them (Aransas, Brooks, Duval, Jackson, Kenedy, Kleberg, Live Oak and Refugio) are geographic HPSAs and the other ten are low-income population HPSAs, with Brooks scoring 22 of 25. For mental health, 15 counties are county-wide geographic HPSAs, DeWitt and Lavaca hold low-income designations, and Nueces is designated only in some census tracts.
Nearly 30% of the region's people, 232,631 of them, live in nonmetro counties, and CMS lists five critical access hospitals, in Edna, Hallettsville, Port Lavaca, Refugio and Yoakum. Statewide, the Texas Center for Nursing Workforce Studies counted 64 APRNs per 100,000 residents in nonmetro counties against 120 in metro ones. The preceptor pool here gathers in Corpus Christi and Victoria, so a rural preceptor who says yes is worth keeping for as many hours as UT Tyler allows.
Five health center organizations run 34 sites. Community Action Corporation of South Texas has 20, from Kingsville, Alice and Beeville to Falfurrias and Sinton. Amistad Community Health Center serves Corpus Christi, Aransas Pass and Robstown, and Community Health Centers of South Central Texas covers Gonzales and Victoria.

The region's thin hospital count, 16 Medicare-certified hospitals by CMS's file, shapes which courses are easy and which need a long runway. Use this as a first map, then confirm each site with your course faculty.

Does Driscoll Children's use myClinicalExchange for NP students?
Driscoll says it adopted myClinicalExchange to run its student clinical placement program, and students of approved affiliate schools get access through their school coordinator. The page does not say whether NP students follow that route or how preceptors are chosen, so confirm with your UT Tyler course faculty before counting on Driscoll for NURS 5453. Students outside an affiliate program start with its professional development center.
Is there a Level I trauma center near Corpus Christi?
Not on the DSHS list current in September 2026. The region tops out at Level II, at CHRISTUS Spohn Shoreline and Corpus Christi Medical Center Bay Area, with Level III care at Citizens and DeTar in Victoria and a contingent Level III at Driscoll. For an AGACNP practicum, that still gives two high-acuity hospitals in Corpus Christi.
How long does a new CHRISTUS agreement take?
CHRISTUS's workflow estimates an average of 30 to 60 days for the middle steps of its agreement review, and no student starts before the agreement is fully executed. Stack that on top of UT Tyler's own approvals, which must be complete before the semester begins. CHRISTUS also notes it cannot promise a rotation to every interested student.
Can a telehealth psychiatric preceptor cover my Coastal Bend hours?
Only part of them. UT Tyler caps telehealth at 63 hours per PMHNP course, requires the preceptor, you and the patients to be in Texas, and expects telehealth teaching to happen on site with the preceptor supervising. With one psychiatric hospital in the region, plan the program's 125 inpatient hours well before your first practicum.
How far is Corpus Christi from UT Tyler?
Roughly 395 miles, close to eight hours by road, while Victoria is about 295. The distance matters for FNP OSCE days and the PMHNP's few campus visits, not for clinical hours, which you complete near home in Texas. The OSCE days guide explains the campus schedule.
