NP preceptors in Beaumont and the Golden Triangle
The Golden Triangle is compact: three counties, about 400,000 people and four Medicare-certified hospitals. That makes it easy to map and quick to exhaust, since the list of hospitals and clinics a student can approach is short. A UT Tyler NP student here does best by securing a preceptor well before the semester and knowing which rules each hospital publishes.

Three counties, one metro area
Texas DSHS treats Hardin, Jefferson and Orange counties as Public Health Region 5 South and runs them from its combined 6/5S office. The same three counties form the Census Bureau's Beaumont-Port Arthur metro area, so every county here is metropolitan. The Census estimate for July 2025 was 399,310 residents, 1.3% of Texas.
Beaumont (about 113,000) and Port Arthur (about 55,800) are the anchors, followed by Orange, Nederland, Groves, Lumberton and Port Neches, with Vidor, Bridge City and Silsbee smaller. From Tyler the drive is roughly 190 miles to Beaumont, 200 to Orange and 210 to Port Arthur, close to four hours each way on OSCE days. Jasper, Newton and Tyler counties belong to the East Texas guide, and the Houston counties to the Houston and Gulf Coast guide.
The hospitals and what they publish
CHRISTUS Southeast Texas St. Elizabeth in Beaumont describes itself as a 431-bed acute care and trauma center, and DSHS lists it as Level III. It has no rotation request form of its own, so the CHRISTUS system rules apply: a signed Clinical Education Affiliation Agreement with the school before the term, a review CHRISTUS says averages 30 to 60 days, and no start until the agreement is fully executed. CHRISTUS routes current students through their faculty advisor, who names the CHRISTUS site and writes to the system's academic office.
Baptist Hospitals of Southeast Texas runs its Beaumont hospital (Level IV), an Orange campus and the Baptist Behavioral Health Center, along with internal medicine, psychiatry and pharmacy residencies. The Medical Center of Southeast Texas in Port Arthur operates under Healthcare Systems of America policies dated January 2025, and Altus Lumberton Hospital in Hardin County belongs to an emergency-focused network. Neither publishes a student page, and no Port Arthur, Orange or Hardin County hospital appears on the DSHS trauma list. Veterans get primary care at the Beaumont VA Clinic, part of the VA Houston system.
Whichever site you target, UT Tyler's sequence holds: the preceptor goes into your Self-Placement Request, course faculty sign off, the Clinical Coordinator verifies the site, an unfamiliar facility first signs an affiliation agreement, and nothing logged before that approval counts.
Shortage designations and health centers
In HRSA's September 2026 shortage data, all three counties carry both a primary care and a mental health designation. Hardin and Orange are county-wide geographic shortage areas for both. Jefferson, home to Beaumont and Port Arthur, is designated for its low-income residents, and its primary care score of 18 on HRSA's 0 to 25 scale is the region's highest. For mental health, Orange, Hardin and low-income Jefferson each score 13.
Community care runs through 15 health center sites from three organizations: Gulf Coast Health Center (eight sites in Port Arthur, Orange and Silsbee), TAN Healthcare, the Triangle Area Network (Beaumont and Orange), and Legacy Community Health (three sites in Beaumont). For FNP students, these networks and the private family and internal medicine practices around them are the core of the search. Lamar University's JoAnne Gay Dishman School of Nursing in Beaumont lists online MSN tracks in education and administration, with no nurse practitioner track.

Inpatient psychiatry is the pinch point. According to an archived copy of its page, Baptist calls its Behavioral Health Center the only inpatient behavioral health facility in Southeast Texas, and the same page describes its Children's Emergency Center as the area's only pediatric emergency room. UT Tyler requires at least 125 inpatient hours across the PMHNP program, so plan that rotation first or look toward the Houston region, where CMS lists 15 psychiatric hospitals; the PMHNP practicum guide has the rules.

Questions UT Tyler students ask
Does Baptist Hospitals of Southeast Texas take NP students?
Its student observer page, read from an archived copy, says internships are offered through affiliated schools and that students first check with its Education Department whether their school has an agreement. The page says nothing specific about NP students. Ask your Clinical Coordinator whether an agreement covers UT Tyler before you propose a Baptist preceptor.
Can I count clinical hours at a clinic in Lake Charles or elsewhere in Louisiana?
No. UT Tyler's NP tracks require Texas residence and a Texas site for every clinical hour, even when a Louisiana clinic is the shorter drive from Orange or Vidor. PMHNP preceptors and facilities must also be Texas-licensed. The Texas-only clinicals guide explains the rule and the older pages that contradict it.
Why start a Beaumont preceptor search a full semester early?
Because the local list is short and the demand is statewide. Texas had 45 graduate programs leading to APRN licensure in 2025, according to the state's nursing workforce center, and every graduate nursing school offered some courses online. Add UT Tyler's rule that sites be approved before the term, and a search that starts one semester ahead is the safer plan.
Can an AGACNP student complete all six practica in the Golden Triangle?
Possibly, but plan for variety. The certificate's six practica each carry 125 hours and each fills one 7-week session, and the region's acute care is concentrated in CHRISTUS St. Elizabeth and Baptist Beaumont.
