El Paso and Far West Texas: a clinical guide for UT Tyler NP students
Far West Texas is six border counties, about 900,000 people and, at roughly 735 road miles, the part of the state farthest from Tyler. Its three largest hospital systems publish clear rules, and all three arrange rotations school to hospital, so your preceptor search and UT Tyler's agreement work have to run side by side.

El Paso, the Big Bend and the long drive
This region is DSHS Public Health Region 10: El Paso, Hudspeth, Culberson, Jeff Davis, Presidio and Brewster counties. The Census Bureau estimated 900,160 residents in July 2025, and the city of El Paso holds about 683,000 of them, with Socorro, Horizon City, San Elizario and Anthony close by. Alpine, Presidio, Van Horn and Marfa are the Trans-Pecos towns. Only about 18,900 people live in the four nonmetro counties.
All six counties sit on HRSA's border list, and DSHS reports border residents uninsured at 27% against 17% elsewhere in Texas.
Tyler is roughly 735 road miles from El Paso, about twelve and a half hours by routing estimates, and roughly 615 from Alpine or Van Horn. For FNP OSCE days that means a travel day on each side of the exam; the OSCE planning guide covers timing. Every clinical hour stays out here.
How El Paso's hospitals take students
- University Medical Center of El Paso (El Paso County Hospital District) routes every rotation, clinical or not, through its Affiliation Program. It accepts students only from affiliated schools and programs, says placement is coordinated through the schools, and asks for an onboarding packet (pre-clinical clearance, faculty credentialing, a vehicle log, a nondisclosure agreement) plus an orientation for first-timers. The program also covers UMC's clinics and UMC Surgical Hospital, opened in 2024.
- The Hospitals of Providence, Tenet's El Paso network of eight campuses including Providence Children's Hospital, arranges rotations with faculty or clinical instructors rather than with students, and points interested students back to their faculty. Faculty download its orientation information and clearance forms.
- Las Palmas Del Sol Healthcare (HCA; Del Sol Medical Center and Las Palmas Medical Center): according to archived 2025 copies of its school affiliations page, rotation requests are due at least two months before a program starts and paperwork at least two weeks before, handled by HCA's Academic Partnerships team.
UT Tyler does not appear on UMC's list of affiliated NP programs, so a UMC rotation begins with a school-to-hospital contract, the process covered in affiliation agreements.
Hospitals with no student page
El Paso Children's Hospital (148 beds) publishes no student page, which matters for pediatric planning. William Beaumont Army Medical Center at Fort Bliss addresses visiting medical students only. The El Paso VA has no inpatient hospital of its own: its main clinic stands beside Beaumont, which provides veterans' inpatient care under a sharing agreement.
In the Big Bend, Big Bend Regional Medical Center in Alpine (a Quorum Health hospital) and Culberson Hospital in Van Horn are the two critical access hospitals, and neither shows student information online. For acute care, DSHS names UMC the region's only Level I trauma center, Del Sol and Providence East Campus Level II, and Las Palmas, Providence Memorial and William Beaumont Level III.
Border health centers and shortage designations
Four organizations run 73 health center sites, a dense network for six counties. Project Vida Health Center alone lists 51, across El Paso, Horizon City, Socorro, Clint, Fort Hancock and Sierra Blanca. Centro de Salud Familiar La Fe runs 11 in El Paso, San Elizario and Canutillo, Centro San Vicente five, and Preventative Care Health Services six in Alpine, Marfa, Presidio and Terlingua.
HRSA marks Brewster, Hudspeth, Jeff Davis and Presidio as county-wide primary care shortage areas, Culberson as a low-income one and parts of El Paso County at the tract level; Hudspeth scores 21 of 25. For mental health, the five rural counties carry geographic designations and El Paso County a low-income one. TTUHSC El Paso's Gayle Greve Hunt School of Nursing, described in an archived 2024 copy of its site, trains nurses here too.
Matching UT Tyler courses to Far West Texas
Pediatrics for NURS 5453 means outpatient practices in El Paso; El Paso Children's and Providence Children's are hospital landmarks without a published NP route. NURS 5454, NURS 5455 and the internships NURS 5347 and NURS 5349 fit the health center network, which reaches from Canutillo to Terlingua. AGACNP students in NURS 7383 to NURS 7388 look to the trauma hospitals above.
PMHNP students need at least 125 inpatient hours across NURS 5367 to NURS 5373, and CMS lists three psychiatric hospitals in the region. On the New Mexico line, remember that UT Tyler counts only Texas hours, so the El Paso VA's Las Cruces clinic and any practice across the line are out; see Texas-only clinicals.
The order of work for an El Paso rotation
- Secure the preceptorFind a clinician in your course's specialty who agrees to teach, and collect what UT Tyler's Self-Placement Request needs.
- Check who owns the siteIf the practice belongs to UMC, Providence or Las Palmas Del Sol, the hospital deals with UT Tyler, so tell your faculty early.
- Work to the hospital's clockLas Palmas Del Sol wanted requests at least two months ahead in its archived 2025 page; UMC needs its packet and orientation before day one.
- Start only when clearedFaculty approve, the Clinical Coordinator clears, and hours logged before approval do not count.

Questions UT Tyler students ask
Is UT Tyler on UMC El Paso's affiliation list?
Not on the current list UMC publishes, which names 11 nurse practitioner programs such as Texas Tech, UTEP and New Mexico State. UMC accepts students only from affiliated schools and tells students from unlisted programs to contact its Affiliation Program Administrator. Raise a UMC site with your UT Tyler faculty early, because the agreement runs between the school and the hospital.
Can I contact The Hospitals of Providence myself about a rotation?
Its clinical rotations page says rotations are arranged with faculty or clinical instructors, not directly with students, and sends interested students to their faculty. You can still identify a willing preceptor who practices there; the formal request then comes from UT Tyler's side, using the orientation and clearance forms Providence posts for faculty.
Does a clinic in Las Cruces count for UT Tyler clinical hours?
No. UT Tyler's NP students must live in Texas and complete every clinical hour in Texas, and the PMHNP rules add that preceptor, student and patients must all be in Texas. Las Cruces is in New Mexico, so a site there, a VA clinic included, falls outside the rule even though it is a short drive from El Paso.
Are there NP preceptors in the Big Bend?
Not many, which is what the county-wide shortage designations reflect. Preventative Care Health Services runs six health center sites in Alpine, Marfa, Presidio and Terlingua, and Culberson Hospital lists the Van Horn Rural Health Clinic among its services. If one small clinic cannot fill a whole course, pair it with a second approved preceptor, with faculty sign-off on both.
